It turns so that people can stand up. The drive, the arrays, the tanks — every other system on this ship exists to get the ring where it is going.
Ten years of my work has been the ring: the layer a person actually stands on, holding steady while everything behind it moves.

Deep transit
Four hundred and twelve days out, the ship is further from help than anything crewed has ever been. Every system aboard is running on its own judgement, and the only thing arriving from outside is radio.
That is most of what a decade of this work has actually been. Not the launch — the long middle of it, with no audience, where the only way to know the thing still holds is that the layer people stand on has not moved.
